M037 How to Test Heating Elements with an Ohmmeter: (3 min 27 sec)
In this video you will learn how to test the heating elements of an electric kiln with a multimeter (ohmmeter). You can use the knowledge from this video to test other types of appliances, too. The appliance you are testing (in this case a kiln) must be turned off before checking it with an ohmmeter. You can leave the switch-to-element or relay-to-element lead wires attached to the element connectors as long as the elements are not wired in parallel and the switches are turned off. Check with your wiring diagram if in doubt. If two wires are attached to each element connector, disconnect the wires from one element connector. This is to prevent the ohmmeter from measuring the ohms in an element that is parallel to the one you are testing. The video demonstrates this principle.
