M025 Removing Melted Glass or Glaze from a Firebrick Bottom (14 min 35 sec)
This video shows how to remove embedded glass or glaze from the firebrick bottom of a kiln. The video progresses through three stages of difficulty. Stage 1: Remove the glass and recoat the bottom with kiln wash. Stage 2: Remove the glass and fill the void in the brick bottom with a mixture of powdered firebricks (kaolin grog) and kiln cement. Stage 3: Cut out the damaged area and replace it with a new piece of firebrick. In this video you will learn to shape firebricks with sanding blocks and cement the new piece into the firebrick bottom. You will also learn to make your own sanding blocks for kiln repair. Note: Please monitor your kiln during operation to avoid an overfire.
