Paragon Introduces New Glass Kiln

12/18/2003

Paragon has just introduced a glass kiln called the Pearl-18. The name comes from the “clamshell” tilt-top design. The top lifts away to give access to the shelf area. Air pistons assist in lifting the top.

“You can compose directly on the kiln shelf, then close the kiln top, and start your firing schedule,” said glass artist Judith Conway, who is using the Pearl-18 in her Washington, DC studio. “There is no need to balance and carry a heavy kiln shelf from your work table over to your kiln, trying to load the shelf in the kiln while not disturbing the glass pieces in your design.”

The Pearl-18 heating elements are mounted in the lid using a new element groove that eliminates element pins. The element coils are wider than the groove opening, so the elements stay in place without pins. In addition, a special ceramic fiber paper covers the firebrick element grooves. It is designed to eliminate brick dust inside the kiln.

The Paragon Pearl-18 is rated to 2000°F. The interior is 18” wide, 18” deep and 8 1/2” high. It fires on a 20 amp, 240 volt circuit. Electrical components are mounted inside the base of the kiln. It uses a digital 3-key controller with 8 ramps and storage for 4 custom programs.
