Good Kiln Sitter Habits

Here are several habits that will help assure that your Dawson Kiln Sitter works properly:

1) Place the small cone on the cone supports the same way every time. (Exception: you are trying to fire just a little hotter or cooler and know how to position the cone to achieve the result you want.)

2) Use a thin layer of kiln wash on the cone supports and actuating rod. Keep kiln wash, mixed with water, in a small jar near the kiln for convenient application. A nail polish brush is a good choice for storing kiln wash, since it has an applicator brush. Use kiln wash sparingly. If it builds up on the cone supports and actuating rod, remove the excess.

3) Do not place the cone right up against the porcelain tube. Doing so can affect the bending of the cone, because the cone can stick to the tube.

4) Adjust the Kiln Sitter with the firing gauge every month or so.

5) Periodically check that the actuating rod moves freely inside the porcelain tube. If rod movement becomes sluggish, replace the porcelain tube and actuating rod.

6) Read your Kiln Sitter manual. Learn to make the adjustments yourself. They are simple to perform and will make you more familiar with the Kiln Sitter.

Sincerely,
