THE KILN’S CIRCUIT WIRE SIZE

Before installing your kiln, please look up the recommended wire gauge for the kiln’s circuit. That information is listed in the kiln manufacturer’s specifications for most brands of kilns.

If you are planning to connect the kiln to an existing circuit, be sure the circuit has been wired with the correct wire gauge for the circuit breaker. The wire gauge, or thickness, determines how much electricity can safely pass through the circuit. The thicker the wire, the lower the wire gauge number. (For instance, a #12 wire is thicker than a #14 wire.)

If possible, install the kiln within 25’ (7.6 meters) of the breaker or fuse panel. For every additional 50’ (15 meters) from the panel, increase the circuit wire size by one gauge.

Have an electrician determine the wire gauge of the circuit for you if you are in doubt.

This morning the frost on my truck windows formed the geometric patterns of a pottery crystalline glaze. As I drove to Paragon in darkness, passing headlights and green and red traffic lights expanded in soft halos in the hazy glass. Dawn looked like the orange light that appears around a kiln lid.

I imagine that you have been busy making beautiful gifts in your kiln. That is a relaxing, enjoyable way to prepare for Christmas. All of us at Paragon wish you a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year.

Thank you,

With best wishes,
