Since it's not cheap, I decided to figure out how to get more than one use out of it. I figured out that if you wait for the glass to cool completely, then when you lift it, the Thinfire just stays nicely on the shelf. But if you lift while the glass is still holding some warmth, the Thinfire will come up with it. --from the artglasspics@yahoogroups.com discussion forum ----------- READER RESPONSE David Kittrell of Kittrell/Riffkind Art Glass in Dallas, Texas wrote, “I found your message both personal and warming. Let me share what I do. Every ornament goes on my tree with a face or memory assigned to it. As I ‘hang the tree,’ I also relive those happenings. With all the memories, it sometimes takes a while to get them all up, but that's all right. Good Tidings, and Have a Very Merry Christmas!” Ruth Fulks of Southington, Ohio wrote, “Just wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Our kilns have been going non-stop helping Santa get ready for Christmas. Our prize design is a three-inch Santa face. We have enjoyed the smiles as we give our projects away.” ----------- RECENT Q&As Q. How do I adjust the switches on my SnF-82-3 so I can operate the kiln with a portable TnF 2 controller? A. Plug the TnF 2 into the wall outlet. Install the thermocouple using the instructions that came with the TnF 2, and plug the kiln into the TnF 2. (To install the thermocouple, drill a hole in the kiln wall, or mount the thermocouple in a drilled peephole plug.) Turn the top kiln switch to MAX. Turn the second switch counter-clockwise about a quarter turn. Then turn it slowly clockwise until the pointer aligns with ON and you hear a double click. Load the Kiln Sitter with a small cone that is one to two cones hotter than the cone you are firing to. This turns the Kiln Sitter into a safety backup. Turn the Kiln Sitter timer knob to about an hour past the expected shutoff time. Then program the TnF 2 controller. After the kiln shuts off, turn the switches to the off position, or disconnect the kiln from the power. ----------- A PARAGON CHRISTMAS STORY Many years ago an employee named Mike borrowed a large ceramic Christmas tree from the company founder, Frances Darby. He photographed the tree inside a Paragon kiln for a calendar we were printing. Mike found a job elsewhere. After he gave his two-week notice, he inadvertently broke the tree. “I’m hiding the tree over here,” he told me as he placed the pieces on a table in the print shop. “Don’t let Frances see it until after I leave.” One morning Mrs. Darby saw her broken tree behind a plastic laminating machine. “I see that my tree has gone the way of all flesh,” she said. “What happened to it?” “Mike broke it, but he didn’t want you to see it until after he left. He thought you’d be upset.” We both laughed. Shaking her head, she said, “He should have known I wouldn’t be mad about it.” I laugh whenever I think about that incident.
