Kiln Pointers

The wall outlet

The kiln should be located within 25 feet of the breaker or fuse panel. For every additional 50 feet from the panel, increase circuit wire size by one gauge.

Every few firings, touch the wall receptacle face plate. It should feel cool. A hot face plate indicates a loose connection in the receptacle. Replace the receptacle.

During firing, if you smell burning plastic, turn off the breaker immediately. Touch the wall receptacle faceplate. If it feels hot, again, replace the receptacle. Replace the kiln cord if it has been damaged by heat from the outlet. DO NOT FIRE THE KILN UNTIL THE RECEPTACLE AND CORD ARE REPAIRED!

We recommend an electrical shutoff box near the kiln.
