Are your knifemaking furnaces built differently than competitive furnaces, and if so, how?

Are your knifemaking furnaces handier than competitive furnaces? If so, how?

A chain holds the Paragon KM-24D drop door in the open position and out of the way for ease of operation. The counter-weight handle keeps the door securely closed.

Are your knifemaking furnaces ideal for certain knife or blade styles and not so much for others?

The KM-24D maximum temperature is 2000 degrees F. We can customize the furnace for higher temperatures, however.

How popular is your KM-24D knifemaking furnace?

We introduced the KM-24D about 20 years ago. It was an immediate hit, because the 24" length can heat treat the largest bowie knives. It began outselling our original KM-14D furnace (which we still make).

What is different about your knifemaking furnaces from other brands of furnaces?

Dropped, recessed brick grooves protect the heating elements. We avoid spacing the grooves too close together, which weakens the insulating firebricks.

When did you produce your first knifemaking furnaces?

Paragon was founded in 1948. We entered the knifemaking business in 1986. Our plant manager made knives to test our new KM-14D furnace and enjoyed it so much that he became an avid knifemaker himself.

Without having to go into detail, how does a furnace work? Does the bladesmith start it and put the blade in for a certain amount of time?
