Profiting by Design: A Jewelry Maker's Guide to Business Success, by Marlene Richey

Running your own jewelry design business can be challenging, exhilarating, nerve-wracking, and ultimately rewarding. This basic, easy-to-understand guide covers everything from identifying a target market and setting up shop to pricing, marketing, and selling your individual designs--all while having fun along the way. Marlene Richey also provides real-life lessons from such esteemed jewelry designers as Barbara Heinrich, Michael Bondanza, Chris Correia, and Michael Good, and others. Profiting by Design will show you how to succeed at starting a business that you can proudly call your own.

Marlene Richey has been in jewelry design and craft for more than 30 years. A former gallery owner who also ran an award-winning design firm, William Richey Designs, she has participated in hundreds of craft and jewelry trade shows, mastered marketing strategies and sales presentations, and earned a following among emerging artists for her generosity in passing along her hard-earned expertise. She's taught workshops and classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Maine College of Art, and the North Bennet Street School in Boston, among others. She is currently serving on the board of directors of the Society of North American Goldsmiths.

“Marlene covers all the important steps a jewelry designer needs to take and explains each one of them fully, including understanding basic accounting terms, writing a business plan, choosing a photographer, establishing your brand, applying to shows, creating booth displays, and much, much more. With the voice of experience, she offers advice on everything you need to know to run a jewelry design business.

“This is not a dry textbook. Marlene presents the information in a positive real-life way that encourages you to succeed, no matter how small or how large you want your venture to be. Knowing how to run a business does not come naturally to me, and I am often left more confused when I read information on the subject. However, I found Marlene’s writing style easy to follow, and her personal experiences enabled me to visualize the lessons.

“I highly recommend Profiting by Design to all jewelry designers who are not experienced in business practices and who want to make a living doing what they love.” --Kelley Oberreit
